  • 3/8/2010 6:14 pm:  Social media blackout for this geek behind the Great Firewall of China (again) (this update is only made possible from Ping.fm)

Since 'the geek shall inherit the earth', this geek is just waiting for his day to rule the world. In the meantime, he is a young Padawan for CNET Asia whilst toying with a myriad of fun stuff disguised as work and pretending to advise companies on tech business and new media strategies. His playmates range from startups, (un)Fortune 500s, to government organisations. And JUST in case you were wondering, this blog is NOT about to make this geek a politician like his Malaysian CNET counterpart.

I’m just playing with some themes as I upgraded this blog to the latest Wordpress 2.6.2.

Lots been happening, just landed from some crazy travellings not too long and have to travel quite a bit again. I think I’m gonna do like 60-70k krisflyer miles in 1 month?

Also have some speaking engagements this couple of weeks, one of them is for the Government of Brunei Darussalam’s THiNKBIG NATIONAL TECHNOLOGY FORUM. I’ll be speaking on “Technology Focus: Embracing the New Media”. Recently, I’ve had the chance to do some strategic work for governments in a few areas of technology, one of them being new media.

Another interesting speaking engagement will be this week at National Library Board’s SME Workbench 2008 on 16th Oct, also on new media.

Guess the interest in new media is really turning mainstream.

I seldom blog or share much thoughts on new media and social media on my blogs. I seldom get much chance to blog. Period. (Well, except for my more regular posts on gadgets and personal tech on CNET Asia.)

I’d really love to share more of my thoughts, especially on social media in this part of the world. Guess I’m holding back because of the lack of context which I’m trying to build. Anyways, I found an interesting avenue to share a bit more at the social media breakfast forum here.

I’m just glad to be back in time (though I totally missed the F1) to catch Singapore Slingers’ games against Sydney Spirits and Beijing Aoshen (translated into Olympic gods). You can read about them at our cool Doc’s blog here.

The Slingers’ next game will be really exciting against Malaysian All-stars on 5th November.

Will we bring back the Kallang roar?

Here’s a photo to share with you from my travels, taken from the Canon S5 IS :

Had many pics like this, dunno why I never really liked window seats before. But this time I’ve always been requesting for window seats so that I can snap away with my camera. I guess it’s because the Canon S5 IS is really a joy to use for such occasions. I also took some great shots from the Slingers games :

Hope to share more pics soon, have tonnes of them on my harddisks here :p

Just came back from a whole week of travelling (more than 50 hours in the air). Gonna take a slight breather before doing another 60-70 hours over the next few weeks. The thing is, I managed to rush back in time for the Singapore Slingers’ match against Pure Foods Tendy Juicy Giants (you read it right) on Tuesday night!

I think all who were there that night must agree that we’ve never experienced basketball entertainment like this before, and it doesn’t even matter whether you’re a basketball fan or not.

For a start, this was the first time I’ve ever seen such a long queue at the SISTIC outlet for the Slingers tickets, Read more…

In case you dunno who’s Darren Ng, he’s a local basketball heart throb just recruited by the Singapore Slingers.

For a chinese, he’s really good in the game and even won the coveted Woollacott Medal award as the leading player in the 2006 ABA Central Conference. When he was in China for a few matches, the online forums went crazy wanting to recruit him for China! haha.. and did you know he’s a qualified medical doctor too?

So, you think geeks can’t jump?

Well that day I beat Darren Ng in basketball!

For the past few weeks, I’ve been doing 720degrees slamdunks, alley-hoops, 3-pointers with 95% accuracy, and a lot more of that jazz just to warm myself up for the exciting new season of Singapore Slingers starting this September!

Oh, in case you were wondering - just like white men, geeks can’t jump. So I’ve really been talking about doing my hoops and hooks on the latest NBA Ballers : The Chosen One on my XBOX360 which Microsoft has kindly passed me a review copy together with Ninja Gaiden II in May 2008.

While Ninja Gaiden II blew me away with it’s amazing graphics and gameplay, it was really NBA Ballers : The Chosen One that got me hooked to the screen like I was catching the finals of American Idol as I wore the shoes of Kobe Bryant and Yao Ming and slamdunked all over over my opponents.

Hey, they’re running a contest over at the website too for the nicest game graphic!

Trip to the Conference Finals for Two, Video Game Package (5 games), Dwight Howard Signed Jersey & NBA Ballers: Chosen One design opportunity

Oh did I mentioned that we have a stellar new lineup at the Singapore Slingers with some of the very best signings the NBL has ever seen? Complete with local heartthrob Darren Ng (OK, he’s Malaysian) who was once voted the top player in South Australia! Watch out NBL!
