Since 'the geek shall inherit the earth', this geek is just waiting for his day to rule the world. In the meantime, he is a young Padawan for CNET Asia whilst toying with a myriad of fun stuff disguised as work and pretending to advise companies on tech business and new media strategies. His playmates range from startups, (un)Fortune 500s, to government organisations.

I wasn’t at the ceremony tonight but pleased to know that Adrin from Yakun won the special category award! Now, where are the tech companies? I count only 3 of them amongst the 30 winners!

SINGAPORE, 15 November 2010 – Champion of small and medium entrepreneurs (SMEs) in
Singapore, the Spirit of Enterprise (SOE) tonight convened its annual SOE Awards naming 30
honourees and the inaugural winner for its new award category. This year’s awardees come from various industries, including beauty and wellness, clean technology, food & beverage, logistics, media & entertainment and professional services, among others.

Eight years into igniting the entrepreneurial spirit among Singaporeans, SOE Awards has since recognised and honoured 304 self-reliant local entrepreneurs operating small and medium-sized businesses. Through the annual awards, SOE distinguishes the SMEs’ tenacity for building up their businesses.

Guest of Honour, Mr Lee Yi Shyan, Minister of State for Trade & Industry and Manpower, in his speech during the awards ceremony, urged SMEs to improve their productivity: “While our SMEs actively seek growth opportunities, they must have the capacity back home to innovate, create new business models and improve existing product and services. The objective is to stay ahead of global competition, by creating new values from their solutions. To achieve this, our SMEs need to invest in their innovative capabilities.”

Sounds like something straight out of a spy movie? In this day and age, you never know especially after Google claimed that the Chinese government orchestrated an attack on their services just early this year. Read the full release from Symantec for yourself and be your own judge:

SINGAPORE, October 7, 2010 – Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) has released the findings of its 2010 Critical Information Infrastructure Protection (CIP) Survey, which highlights that 53 percent of critical infrastructure providers report that their networks have experienced what they perceived as politically motivated cyber attacks.  Participants claimed to have experienced such an attack on an average of 10 times in the past five years, incurring an average cost of $850,000 to their businesses.  Survey participants from the energy industry reported that they were best prepared for such an attack, while participants from the communications industry reported that they were the least prepared.  Critical infrastructure providers represent industries that are of such importance either to a nation’s economy or society that if their cyber networks were successfully attacked and damaged, the result would threaten national security.

This geek saw the product demo for myself and was pretty impressed so I agreed to be listed as one of the talents/consultants on the site since it’s non-exclusive anyways. Not sure about the World’s 1st claim but they’ve already filed the patent it seems. Check out the worldwide release of Pepperconn’s “Social Media Groupware for Enterprises”:

    Pepperconn Logo

    - A major breakthrough in Enterprise Social Media Software with patent filed

    - Groupware lowers entry barriers for SME owners and marketers to self-manage their own social media or digital campaigns (programs)

    - Creates a new ecosystem of online talents and opportunities to monetize one’s talents

Singapore, 25 January 2010pepperconn LLP today launched the pepperconn Groupware, a collaborative software for enterprises to manage content and talents in social media programs where the goal is to engage customers, solicit feedback and generate marketing buzz on the internet.   Such programs leverage on one or more social network (eg. Facebook and Twitter), the company’s blog and corporate website to aggregate user-generated content and grow its base of readers.

Typically, an agency will be appointed to manage such programs and to source for bloggers and talents – an option that is usually frustrating for both corporate clients and agencies due to a lack of real-time visibility, measurements of success, project management inefficiencies and it is costly for SMEs and marketers with tighter budgets

“It was from this frustration as a corporate marketer driving social media marketing campaigns at SingTel, Samsung and Nokia, that I Read more…

Some of you might have read about a new investment which I just made which I couldn’t announce earlier.

I’ve finally completed the investment this month and it’s now official: I’m privileged to be able to advise and invest in the company which owns and operates Singapore’s most well-read entrepreneurship and startup site: SGEntrepreneurs.com (SGE).

SGE seeks to provide the most comprehensive coverage on Singapore’s startup and entrepreneurship scene and some of the startups featured in SGE have gone on to feature in renowned international sites like Mashable, TechCrunch, KillerStartups, folksonomy, Malaysia Entrepreneurs, etc.

You can read SGE’s announcement about this investment in their latest ’state of the site’ report as well as check out the updated team bio.

This geek is definitely looking forward to an exciting journey ahead working with the good folks at SGE and if you are a startup, an entrepreneur, or toying with the idea of starting out, do feel free to ping us and pop by often!
