Since 'the geek shall inherit the earth', this geek is just waiting for his day to rule the world. In the meantime, he is a young Padawan for CNET Asia whilst toying with a myriad of fun stuff disguised as work and pretending to advise companies on tech business and new media strategies. His playmates range from startups, (un)Fortune 500s, to government organisations.

Another announcement at Intel Developer Forum 2010. This geek is not really into KVM but this looks interesting allowing you to watch a full PC boot sequence remotely.

September 13th 2010: At Intel Developer Forum (IDF) in San Francisco, RealVNC will be demonstrating VNC Viewer Plus connecting directly to the KVM remote control functionality embedded in the 2010 Intel®Core™ vPro™ processor family. This unique solution enables IT teams to benefit from additional cost-saving manageability functions such as remote reboot, remote power on/off and IDE redirection.

With VNC Viewer Plus connected to a VNC Server embedded in the hardware, IT departments can diagnose more complex issues remotely such as OS failures and boot problems. Users can watch a full PC boot sequence, manipulate BIOS settings and re-install an operating system, reducing the need for desk-side visits and any downtime.

Convergence is not always good, especially if you are working in secured environments like military and financial institutions where cameras are often not allowed. This geek heard of someone who literally put a nail through his phone’s camera in order to convince the guard to let him through with his phone. So here’s another option, at least one company’s making an effort for this niche segment of the market.

One of the reasons this geek gave up using his Powerbook G4 was due to the Office experience on the Mac being inconsistent with my experience on Office for Windows. Hopefully that will change with Office for Mac 2011. More information in the press release below (Qualifying new purchases of Office 2008 will include a full upgrade to Office 2011):

SINGAPORE, August 3, 2010 — Microsoft Office for Mac 2011, the next version of the leading productivity suite for the Mac, will be available in more than 100 countries around the world at the end of October. The suite will come in two editions to purchase at retail — Office for Mac Home and Student 2011 and Office for Mac Home and Business 2011. For better alignment across platforms, the Office 2011 pricing and edition options map closer with Office for the Windows operating system. In addition, starting today, if customers purchase Office 2008 for Mac, they will be able to upgrade to Office 2011 when it is available at no additional cost through the Microsoft Office for Mac Technology Guarantee Program.

“We develop Office for Mac to give you the tools to create great looking and compatible documents – with options to pick the right edition for your Mac needs,” said Katherine Teu, Regional Marketing Manager, Southeast-Asia, Microsoft Hardware. “More than ever before, Office 2011 brings the familiar productivity tools and features of Microsoft Office to a suite of applications that work great on the Mac.”

Cloud pioneer now offers its suite of web services from new Singapore datacenters to serve customers desiring an Asia Pacific presence

SEATTLE—April 29, 2010—(NASDAQ: AMZN)—Amazon Web Services LLC (AWS), a subsidiary of Amazon.com, Inc., today announced the launch of its first Asia Pacific Region.  Asia Pacific-based businesses or global businesses with customers based in Asia can now leverage the AWS suite of infrastructure web services to build their businesses and run their applications in the cloud.  Prior to today, the AWS platform has been available from datacenters in the U.S. and Europe.  The first AWS Asia Pacific Region (located in Singapore) is now open and any business or software developer can sign up and get started today at http://aws.amazon.com.

Before AWS launched in 2006, businesses would take on the massive capital investment of building their own infrastructure or contract with a vendor for a fixed amount of datacenter capacity that they might or might not use.  This choice meant either paying for wasted capacity or having to worry that the amount of capacity they forecasted was insufficient to keep pace with their growth.  Businesses spent time and money managing their own datacenter or a co-location facility, which meant time not spent on growing their actual business or differentiating their offering for customers.  When it launched in 2006, AWS offered

This geek saw the product demo for myself and was pretty impressed so I agreed to be listed as one of the talents/consultants on the site since it’s non-exclusive anyways. Not sure about the World’s 1st claim but they’ve already filed the patent it seems. Check out the worldwide release of Pepperconn’s “Social Media Groupware for Enterprises”:

    Pepperconn Logo

    - A major breakthrough in Enterprise Social Media Software with patent filed

    - Groupware lowers entry barriers for SME owners and marketers to self-manage their own social media or digital campaigns (programs)

    - Creates a new ecosystem of online talents and opportunities to monetize one’s talents

Singapore, 25 January 2010pepperconn LLP today launched the pepperconn Groupware, a collaborative software for enterprises to manage content and talents in social media programs where the goal is to engage customers, solicit feedback and generate marketing buzz on the internet.   Such programs leverage on one or more social network (eg. Facebook and Twitter), the company’s blog and corporate website to aggregate user-generated content and grow its base of readers.

Typically, an agency will be appointed to manage such programs and to source for bloggers and talents – an option that is usually frustrating for both corporate clients and agencies due to a lack of real-time visibility, measurements of success, project management inefficiencies and it is costly for SMEs and marketers with tighter budgets

“It was from this frustration as a corporate marketer driving social media marketing campaigns at SingTel, Samsung and Nokia, that I Read more…
