images[1]The Continental Automated Buildings Association (CABA), an international not-for-profit industry association dedicated to the advancement of intelligent home and intelligent building technologies, has just announced a liaision agreement with Continua Health Alliance, an international non-profit, open industry alliance of more than 240 leading healthcare and technology organizations dedicated to developing a global ecosystem of personal connected health solutions.

The liaison agreement will allow both organizations to benefit from CABA’s collaborative research study entitled “Aging in the Connected Home”.  The study will examine and determine potential connected home product, service and business opportunities based on needs and expectations of the senior consumer market to support aging-in-place.

This announcement should be considered a significant step forward for the proliferation of pervasive computing for seniors. This geek is thinking about prototypes I’ve seen on products that track elderly folks, sense gait, and know if there is a fall or if there is no motion for a long period of time.

This geek has never worked with Greenplum or EMC technologies but it seems that in this information age over spilling with data, the manageability of information is more important than ever. For those of you who work with these technologies or have a need to manage large amounts of data, this press release might be interesting for you:

Singapore, October 14, 2010 – EMC Corporation (NYSE:EMC) today introduced the new EMC® Greenplum® Data Computing Appliance, an integrated data warehouse system using the breakthrough Greenplum massively parallel processing (MPP) architecture.  It enables organizations to more efficiently make sense of the massive amounts of data they generate from various sources such as always-on networks, the Web, consumers, surveillance systems and sensors. With twice the data loading speed of its nearest competitor and the industry’s best performance, the EMC Greenplum Data Computing Appliance enables more data to be analyzed faster and at lower costs.

The new system was developed and is shipping just 75 days following EMC’s acquisition of Greenplum and comes at a time when IDC predicts that the amount of data over the next decade will grow 44-fold. The disruptive data warehousing technology from Greenplum is a key enabler of “big data” clouds and self-service analytics, allowing organizations to store, manage and closely analyze terabytes of detailed data for faster business insight, conclusions and revelations.  Greenplum is the foundation of EMC’s new Data Computing Products Division, which is developing the analytic tools to address the “big data” phenomenon.

Sounds like something straight out of a spy movie? In this day and age, you never know especially after Google claimed that the Chinese government orchestrated an attack on their services just early this year. Read the full release from Symantec for yourself and be your own judge:

SINGAPORE, October 7, 2010 – Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq: SYMC) has released the findings of its 2010 Critical Information Infrastructure Protection (CIP) Survey, which highlights that 53 percent of critical infrastructure providers report that their networks have experienced what they perceived as politically motivated cyber attacks.  Participants claimed to have experienced such an attack on an average of 10 times in the past five years, incurring an average cost of $850,000 to their businesses.  Survey participants from the energy industry reported that they were best prepared for such an attack, while participants from the communications industry reported that they were the least prepared.  Critical infrastructure providers represent industries that are of such importance either to a nation’s economy or society that if their cyber networks were successfully attacked and damaged, the result would threaten national security.
